![]() The Real Life of Pets Unfortunately, not every pet has a permanent home. Many live in shelters awaiting the purrfect match with a human. On Friday, 7/22 from 5 pm to 7pm, the Steuben County Humane Shelter is bringing a few furry kittens to The Brokaw to build awareness about the shelter in the community. The shelter is always in need of donated items to help keep the pets happy and comfortable while they await their permanent home. Donate an item on the list below and receive a complimentary small popcorn or small fountain drink for one of the Friday night movies. Movie schedule for Friday is Ghostbusters (PG-13) at 6:15pm and 8:55pm and The Secret Life of Pets (PG) at 6:30 pm and 8:45 pm. Purchase tickets in advance. Update: Thanks to your support of this event, the Shelter received several donations (supplies and monetary) and an animal was adopted as a result! Event Photos

The Secret Life of Pets is my favorite movie this year. Well, at least in the animated movies department. I feel like the movie told a great message about race and the law. It was an animated show for children, but I just love the messages that they were able to deliver. I know that there is going to be a second movie for the franchise, and I cannot wait to watch it with my children, I am sure that they will love it.

The animals themselves display recognizable behaviors and ideas that we frequently observe in our own pets, or at least those that we imagine them to have. They talk with the voices and utter the things that we conceive them to say. It's a strategy that virtually everyone can relate to, although tediously. Consider the fundamental bond between Max and Duke, two dogs with straightforward needs: food and a way to get back to Katie, but not necessarily the desire to keep up relationships with other dogs. The two form a tenuous alliance only after bonding over an abundance of sausages during an obviously humorous scene set in a sausage factory. Even yet, a relationship built only on a shared love of sausages isn't very strong.
